Linux is an Open Source UNIX type operating system. Linux is
an excellent platform for developing and deploying many applications.

In working with Linux one needs to know the details of UNIX concepts such
as shell scripting, network configuration, user account management,
daemon service set-up and general administration and maintenance.
Additionally, there are many excellent development tools enabling one to

Applications can range from front-end GUIs designed for ease of use,
to multi-threaded network services designed to be robust and handle high
load.
For special projects it is even possible to extend the Linux operating
system kernel. The kernel is developed primarily using the C programming
language and can be extended to provide special purpose requirements
such as hardware device drivers or enhanced software performance.
